CALL FOR AUTHORS
DOERS AI + OER Case Studies Anthology

Proposals Due: January 31, 2026

The DOERS Innovation Workgroup invites contributions to a forthcoming anthology of case studies on the intersections of generative AI (GenAI) and open educational resources (OER). This project will highlight promising practices and emerging policies across higher education systems, consortia, and institutions among the open education community.

Our goal is to showcase the ways in which open education communities are engaging with GenAI to support student success and innovation, while also acknowledging ethical and practical tensions and roadblocks and discussing how to mitigate these concerns. Contributions may focus on classroom practices, institutional or system-level policies, cross-institutional collaborations, and accessibility-focused approaches.

Eligibility
We welcome perspectives from individuals or working teams of faculty, instructional designers, librarians, administrators, and other higher education leaders. Projects can represent a variety of institutions, organizations, disciplines, and populations including higher education system, statewide, provincial, and consortial contexts.

Scope and Themes
The list of themes below are based on feedback responding to the DOERS Policy Priorities for Generative AI and Open Education Report. Our aim is for these case studies to serve as a useful resource by addressing the issues and efforts that are meaningful to our audience. Case studies are encouraged to explore (but are not limited to):
  • State, Provincial, Consortial, and System-level guidelines and policies that balance pedagogy, student agency, and responsible AI adoption.
  • Cross-institutional collaborations that build shared capacity, resources, or guidelines for bringing together GenAI and OER.
  • Classroom implementations of AI tools that enhance or complicate teaching, learning, and OER use.
  • Social and economic mobility opportunities which use AI to expand participation and support marginalized learners.
  • Critical and ethical considerations such as environmental and social justice impacts of AI.
  • Open Education grant funding with AI included in the funding strategy.
  • Alternate pathways other than determining how to use AI by choosing (when) to not use AI.

Submission Guidelines
  • Proposal Abstracts: Around 350 words
  • Final Case Studies: 1,500-2,000 words
  • Format: Accepted authors will be provided with a structured template to ensure consistency across contributions.
  • Licensing: All case studies will be published in a Pressbooks anthology under a Creative Commons license.

Evaluation Criteria
Submissions will be reviewed by members of the DOERS Innovation Workgroup under the following criteria:
  • Relevance to the call
  • Contribution to the field of AI + OER
  • Author’s role and system/state/consortial/institutional context
  • Community impact and evidence of success
  • Description of the project/initiative
  • Clarity and organization

Each criterion will be scored on a 1-4 scale.

Funding and Payment Schedule
Individual authors and author teams will be paid a stipend of $1,500 per project. Authors will receive half ($750) at the start of the project (upon completion of the MOU) and the other half ($750) upon acceptance of the completed case study.
