The OER Equity Blueprint:

The Role of OER in Advancing Equity

The overarching goal of the DOERS3 OER Equity Blueprint is to define, unpack, and explain the multiple dimensions of equity and foreground the role of OER in closing equity gaps.

DOERS work on the Blueprint has four components:

1. Overview, Theoretical Framework, and Research Foundation
  • Overview: What is the OER Equity Blueprint?
  • Theoretical Framework: Vision, Values and Definitions
  • Research Foundation

2. The Equity Through OER Rubric
A detailed guide and self-assessment tool to integrate equity and equity-mindedness into OER and mobilize OER to close equity gaps.

3. Case Studies*
  • Affordable Learning Georgia and Accessibility (Jeff Gallant)
  • BCcampus and Accessibility (Josie Gray)
  • The Ohio State University’s Racial Justice Grant Program to increase diverse voices in course materials (Ashley Miller)

*If you would like to submit a case study, please review the submission guidelines.

4. Equity Through OER Rubric Pilot
In 2022-23, t
he DOERS3 Collaborative piloted the Equity Through OER Rubric with postsecondary education partners across the United States and Canada.  Through a grant provided by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, funding has been provided to DOERS3 members in the form of six (6) $10,000 block grants to participating postsecondary institutions, and one (1) grant of $18,000 available to a postsecondary education system or state postsecondary education coordinating organization (SHEEOs).
  • Read the final report, Going Deeper into the Promise of Equity Through OER, which details the results of the pilot.
